  • I Miss Sherman

I'm having some trouble sleeping tonight. I miss my friends in Sherman. I miss Lukas. He's working at a youth camp in San Marcos. He's twenty-one and I'm nineteen, so I don't know if this is going to work. San Marcos is a good four hours away, and his hometown is Austin. I live in Plano. Christine and Libby live nearby. Fairview and McKinney are relatively close. We're planning on getting together with Newt and maybe going to North Park.

I miss my dorm. West Plano doesn't feel like home anymore. My bed is too big. My comforter is too green, and my walls are too cream colored. Wifi is too fast. Jogging trails are too paved. Television stations are too plentiful and too defined. Food isn't shoveled onto a trey from a half trained cafeteria worker. Locals are too civilized. I'm surrounded by too many babies, and I don't have a library to work in.

I was happy to come home and see my best friends from high school, but we've all moved on. I miss my Austin College friends. I won't see them until September. I only Skype Lukas once a day for two hours during his break time. It's hard.

Maybe after AC I'll leave West Plano. Fargo has a pretty good job market, and let's face it, I'm a librarian. Everybody thinks I'm joking when I say I'm willing or planning to move to Fargo, but I'm not. Housing is reasonable. Jobs are easy to come by (even for a librarian), and I've been told I'm a Midwest kind of gal.

Ever since The Friday Night Lights Pilot aired in the eighth grade, I've lived by: "Livin' large, good friends, and Texas Forever", and I've taken a lot of crap for it. I don't care though. Texas Forever is something that's deep inside you. It's like a rebellious "Fuck the rest of the world." kind of vibe that's thick in your veins.  Texas Forever doesn't mean I have to stay here. I'm a Texas girl, and always will be; but I don't like Austin (my boyfriend's hometown). I think it's overrated and Dallas is just as interesting, but West Plano doesn't feel right anymore. If I move on, I'm sure I can take Texas Forever with me. For now, I just wish I could take it back to Sherman.

  • A few months ago I was offered a job that was going to take us to the San Marcos area, it fell through. So I took this job in Baton Rouge (which I really like). Then today I got a pretty good job offer in Austin. Oh well, I'm gonna stay put :)

  • @Irish_Russian - you shouldn't stay put. You know they call Austin silicon hills? If you go out to ATX you'll have a stable lifestyle for sure. It's the fastest growing city in the U.S. DFW is number two and Houston is number four. Texas Forever!

  • Dear Texas Forever Friend,

I read your first story, your summer update, and you are a beautiful young lady who has writing skills down.  God bless you, a girl who can use the English language, and I will gladly be your friend.  I hope that your Lukas knows what a brainiac he has, and I get your love for where you are, for my husband is a Californian with the same zeal. Texans and Californians know the truth, that they have it all in one package.

I hope that you will look up my, "Pinkhoneysuckle," for I am my own promoter for now, and I can guarantee you that you would read a chapter or two and will be hooked, and I need for you to take the word to Texas for me, because the book world went to hell about the time I finished my first book, and I look forward to reading more from you, for it is so refreshing to get a note from a really bright 19 year old.  I am the Mama of five very smart kids, everything from a Harvard man to a vet tech, so I know about you kids who will open doors and who have an amazing life before you.

    Blessings, Barb Heintz

  • as an austin college grad and plano native, i'm glad there's someone out there that also feels austin is overrated..and to be honest, dallas is a much better city. it has a greater variety (and higher quality) of all aspects of life. austin is a dirty, disorganized, and arrogant city. damn, i need to get back to dfw.

  • @zen_lawyer - Omg there is another person on the planet who knows about AC!Who was your mentor? And since you're alum, are you allowed to tell me if they really do "put a little bit of themselves" in the boom boom?

  • my mentor was frank rohmer (i was a poli sci major with a minor in french). don't know about the boom boom but i will tell you that i jan-termed in quebec, london and france (because who else can tell you about jan-terms?!).

  • @zen_lawyer - I went to Ghost Ranch this year for photography. I'm going to London next year, and then Ireland to study abroad my junior year.
