    Lucy

Lucy is my sister Sally Kate's dog. Sally Kate got her for graduation, which is stupid because dogs are not allowed in dorms. So Sally Kate went away and left her stupid dog to those of us left behind. I don't know why, but she's attached herself to me.

She's gotta be the stupidest dog I've ever met. She has never been potty trained and will eat everything everything except grapes. She smells and sheds and is so generally disgusting she lives in Sally Kate's bathroom. The place is now called "Lucy's Room". When SK got home from Baylor this summer, she cried her pathetic little eyes out about how the rat had forgotten her. When you're gone for four years, it's hard for a stupid rat dog to remember its mommy. I think Lucy might even resent SK for abandoning her.

This picture I took on Christmas when I got a professional camera. Funny, the Cannon almost made the dog look cute. Almost

I actually think this is pretty funny. That's food for my dog, Jenny. Jenny is a standard poodle who is 10. My sister Valerie won't admit it, but I promise she named her baby after the dog. I would have done the same thing, but my sister went and got herself knocked up before I had the chance.

Sun bathing? Who, knows. I took this yesterday at Sonic with my sister's Blackberry. (My Step-Mom used to work for Steve Jobs. We're not allowed to have iPhones [I bought one at the Verizon in Sherman just to get at her], because evidently Jobs is "the second biggest asshole on Earth". Donald Trump is the first.) C: It's irritating how all my friends just love this little rat, and I hate her. She will pee on anything soft  (things like my comforter).

She shakes all the time. That's normal for a chihuahua, but it's still a little freaky.

She's just a weird dog. I hate the thing, because she was supposed to be my sister's and I got stuck with her. Yes, she is as small as she looks. She's barely four pounds. We ended up with a rat dog, because my dad grew up with one. It's name was D.D. and it lived to be 19. Ugh, by the time Lucy is 19 I'll be 33. Hopefully, Sally Kate will find a dog friendly condo in Uptown before I'm in my mid-30's.

    Sarah

Sarah has been my best friend since the 9th grade. She's from Allen. We used to play club basketball together, and because of the time spent constantly at tournaments we were constantly around each other. She goes to UT-Austin and is a Computer Sci major. When we hangout we usually chill at North Park and evade the people at Nordstroms who constantly ask "can I help you". We've thrown rotten eggs at schools, neighbors, and this d-bag named Cody. Sometimes if we're at the theater and the movie sucks, we throw popcorn at the screen. We intentionally went to the Breaking Dawn premier for the soul purpose of trolling the movie. We do get high together, but only when we're in Austin. When we get drunk, it's a disaster. Sarah's my best friend, and we do some pretty epic stuff together. I would go into more detail, but I don't want to get arrested.

  • The Story of "The Hurt Man"

The parable of The Good Samaritan has always been my favorite. When I was a small child, maybe three, my daddy and I would read every night from a tattered old Children's Bible. The Good Book is still in the family. Penny, the baby dominatrix, is now the Book's owner. I was lucky to find exactly the same book cover online (a less tattered version of course).

Every night I would ask for the story of "The Hurt Man", what I called the Good Samaritan when I was a toddler. I know this is the same cover because of the water-colored artwork.

This is the story of The Good Samaritan from the NIV Bible:

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”

27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[a]; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.

28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”

29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

To me this story has always been about a man who was worthless, so why take the time to help him. From what I understand, Samaritans were the lowest of the low. A gangsta straight outta Compton would even look down on a Samaritan. A priest, by his own vows, would be obligated to help a hurt man in the streets. This priest chose to ignore the man. Evidently, a man in critical condition isn't even worth a priest's time.

Levites were high society. Think of a person from West Plano, Highland Park, or Southlake. Wouldn't these successful citizens, well born and educated, know that a man who is half-dead deserves their immediate attention? Obviously many of us don't care.

A Samaritan was the lowest of the low. White trash. In this story even a trashy Samaritan has the humility, even more so, than those who have been conditioned to look down on a hurt man. Even a person from a trailer park, roach apartment, perhaps even homeless, is more compassionate than those of us born with a silver spoon.

Growing up with this as my favorite story, not just Bible Story, of all time has given me humility. Even though I was born into old money, my blood worth more than some men's lives, I've learned from this story that those without a blade of grass to their name are equal in the Kingdom of Heaven. Equal to me. The Good Samaritan and the "Hurt Man" will always have a special place in my heart. The place of compassion and empathy. I have gone and does likewise, but without this story in my heart; I may not have had the courage.

    Valerie

Valerie is my older sister. She's twenty-five and works as an English Teacher in Trophy Club. it may surprise you, but we don't see each other all that much, but Val might be the easiest person to talk to. She had a baby out of wedlock, so she's used to being judged. I am not perfect either, so we can relate to the ignorance we face. I'm number nine out of ten, so she's stated that she feels obligated to look after her baby sister. Even though she made a huge mistake by letting a guy take advantage of her, I look up to her more than anybody. She has said the same thing about me. I won't ever forget when she said that even though I am the baby girl, she looks up to me and how I've handled controversy. Valerie is everything anybody could want in a big sister. I love her almost as if she were my mother. Sometimes I'm jealous of her baby girl because she gets to be Val's daughter, while I am only her sister.

She helped me through the roughest times of my life. When I quit basketball because of my health, she was there to see me in the hospital everyday. She was constantly encouraging me when Dartmouth put me on the wait list. She helped me choose a college, and told me what schools were looking for in a prospect. If it weren't for Valerie I may not have ended up at Austin College, my dream school. I wouldn't have the good friends I do today, and I wouldn't be so confident and happy. If I ever had children, I would be more than pleased if they turn out to be anything like her. I love her, and she has gotten me through the most.

  • I Don't Want Him to Leave :c

I had a pretty intense conversation with my little brother tonight. I probably shouldn’t say little. He’s really only fifteen months younger than me. Anyway, Clinton was diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder when he was fifteen. We were grateful that we had finally found what could be the cause of his social anxiety. He’s a good boy, with enough friends to be happy, but parties scare him and he decided he did not want a graduation party this year. He said he remembered mine and how nervous he felt when my friends started talking to him.

I think I’m a good looking girl. We live in an affluent area, so most of my friends are knock-outs. It kills me to watch my friends try to flirt with him, and him be completely oblivious. To hear my friends state “Holy Shit! Your brother is hot!!” and then after talking with him their tone changes to “Your brother is kind of weird” or “That kid needs to get laid.”

I’m a pretty social person, so to hear the words “having friends scares me” really broke my heart. He’s leaving for college in less than a month. We have a sister who went to University of Michigan and graduated with a Masters in five years.  I think with a legacy like that, it would be criminal for Michigan not to let him in. He’s also told me that he wants to be a finance major, and possibly work at an accounting firm.

Tonight he was worried about how he’ll act at Freshman Orientation, and wanted to know what it’s like. I told him that Freshman Orientation is even awkward for people without social issues, and to just get it over with. My friends I hang out with now, weren’t who I chilled with in the first few weeks. I think this helped him, but I still want him to be social during all the Freshman Traditions and things like that.

The thing I’m most concerned about is someone taking advantage of him, sexually and academically. He’s smart and doesn’t really need to study. He’s a pretty cute kid, too. He’ll also be on the baseball team. I have to admit if my friends met a smart, cute, D1 athlete with minimal social skills, I’m certain they’d take it upon themselves to “socialize” him.

Tonight my brother said that he read the bible (Even though we’re a Dr.’s family, we still grew up with a religious background.) and saw a verse about a blind man and a man who asked Jesus why. (I don’t know this story, so this is how it was presented to me; and I can’t find it in the Concordance.) In the story the man asked, “Why is this man blind? Is it because his parents sinned or has he done something to offend the Lord?” Clinton told me there wasn’t really a finite answer.

I didn’t know what to say. Clinton was born after my parents split. Our parents went through the whole process duringmy mother’s pregnancy. Our parents have been divorced for eighteen years. I think it’s normal for any kid to place guilt on themselves during a divorce, but I think it’s even worse for Clint. He hasn’t said it, but I’m certain he thinks our mother having another child was the final straw.

He told me tonight that he thinks he’s let everybody down and he’s worried the same thing will happen at college. Even though we’re barely a year apart, I think I’m still obligated to worry about him and his future. It’s clear he blames his Autism on himself and he really hates our dad for leaving our mom while she was pregnant. I just want him to do well, and to be happy where he’s going. I love my brother more than almost anything. We look out for each other, and we’re best friends. It’ll be hard having him all the way up in Michigan. I guess I can’t do anything but wish him luck, and hope that he’ll make some new friends.

He makes some pretty good milkshakes, too. This pic makes me miss West. Haha.

    Hubert Cumberdale Viking

My sister is the principal of a school in Dallas - guess the mascot... I know some kids so I chilled in the classroom for a few hours while I was waiting for my sister to take me to the doctor. It turns out, that day was the "door competition". The students were to decorate the door to reflect the students in the class. One of my best friends goes to this school, so he let me braid the hair. I was in the eleventh grade, and so were most of the students (it's a small school). I think Hubert looks poppin' on camera. I wonder if he still tastes like soot and poo.

    Osiris Shoes

I don't care about many other things that I own, and I have some pretty cool stuff. For some reason, my laptop, stereo, iPhone, Volvo, are so meaningless compared to "the shoes".  Every time I wear a different shoe, my feet just feel unprotected. I've had these babies since Spring Break of my sophomore year. That is more than three years. I don't know why I'm attached to these things. I used to be a bit overweight, and I remember I would always get compliments about my shoes. Eventually, I realized it was okay to want those compliments about myself. My family went to Denver this Spring Break. There was a pretty cool outdoor mall in the heart of Downtown, complete with a Gap and Journey's. Mom begged me to by some new shoes, but I was hesitant. I was so comfortable in the ones on my feet. I looked at her and told her she was going to have to burn my Osiris shoes after we bought the new ones. I haven't worn these shoes so much after I got a new pair of DC's. I know, I know, I have a thing for skater shoes. I just like the way they're flat on the bottom. I left the shoes at home when I went back after Spring Break. When I returned home for the summer, I noticed them, not in my closet, but on the floor by my bed. I knew my mom wasn't going to burn them, but I thought at least she might give them to the Good Will. Maybe that's the way my mom wants to remember me: the silly girl in the silly shoes. I know I'm ready to grow up, but I'm not willing to let these puppies go. They're my most prized possession. I'm not parting with them any time soon. C:

  • Summer Solstice Myths

It's about 9:30 CST and the sun has officially set. The longest day of 2012 is officially over, so here are some myths in tribute to the day passed.

Myth No. 1: The Seasons Change Because of the Earth's Distance From the Sun

A Professor from Indiana University Northwest says one of the biggest misunderstandings about the summer solstice is that it is related to the Earth's distance from the sun. But the Earth rotates around the sun in an almost circular orbit, so the distance between sun and Earth doesn't change very much.

This year the Earth was closest to the sun Jan. 3rd and will be farthest away July 4. "So the distance effect isn't the reason for the summer or season change; they change because the Earth is tilted," he said.

In other words, although the sun is farther away from the Earth during the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, the Earth is tilted toward the sun, and the noon rays hit directly overhead the Tropic of Cancer. But during the winter, when the sun is somewhat closer, the Earth is tilted away from the sun.

The Latin translation of solstice means the sun, standing still; that's because it is about to start descending. After the solstice, the sun's altitude will decrease and the sunlight will become less direct.

Myth No. 2: Summer Solstice Is the Hottest Day of the Year

It's commonly assumed that because the sun's rays are hitting the Earth more directly, the summer solstice is the hottest day of the year. But it takes time for the Earth to heat up. So, in reality, the summer solstice brings the greatest amount of light to the Northern Hemisphere, not the greatest amount of heat.

"The hottest days are weeks later, on the average," The professor said. "The same thing is true in the winter. The winter solstice is Dec. 21; weeks later you get the coldest days."

Local conditions can cause exceptions to this general rule.

Myth No. 3: Behold the 'Egg-quinox': You Can Balance Eggs Upright on a Table

You might not have heard this one: Some people believe that you're more likely to balance eggs upright on a flat surface during the spring equinox when the Earth's axis does not point toward or away from the sun.

But balancing an egg isn't any more likely during the equinox, or the summer solstice, for that matter. It is a misconception that the Earth's axis is somehow shifting in response to the changing seasons.

In reality, you can easily balance eggs upright on a table any day of the year.

Here's how: take a dozen eggs and shake each one until the yolks break up a bit inside the shell so that it can move more freely. Next, put the egg back in the carton to settle the yolk further down. When you try placing the egg on a flat surface it will stand upright because it has become more weighted at the bottom.

Myth No. 4: Druids Celebrate Summer Solstice Because They Are Worshipping the Sun

John Matthews, a historian who wrote the book "Summer Solstice: Celebrating the Journey of the Sun From May Day to Harvest," says people often assume modern-day Druids are sun-worshippers, but "that's not quite true."

"We're celebrating the very necessity of having that light to keep things going," he said.

Matthews, who lives in Oxford, England, has been honoring the solstices for nearly 30 years and has been a Druid for just as long.

In the past, however, he would go to Stonehenge and watch the sun rise. Even three decades later, he says, there's still a sense of wonder when the sun arrives.

"There's always an audible gasp when that happens," he said. "Even when we understand the science of it all; there's a tiny atavistic part of us that isn't quite sure it's going to come up."

The Druids are misunderstood for another reason, he says, because most people assume they are Celtic.

In reality, he said, "They originated before the Celtic people came to Britain."

At that time, he said, Druids believed in the sanctity of the sun and worshipped the sun.

But today, for Matthews, the solstices are about appreciating the Earth's source of light, food, energy and health.

"The idea of lighting a fire on midsummer and also midwinter is to welcome in the sun and remind the sun that we're here," he said.

Well, the sun has gone down for tonight. This year's solstice lasted from about 5:45AM - 9:30PM - in North Texas at least.

    Messing With the Door

One of the awesomest things about last year was messing with our door. We would put weird things on it, decorate it, and defile it with whatever we had. Memes, stupid pictures, and notes were all fair game. This (as stated) was the funniest thing my roommate had ever seen.
